  • – Where you saw it
  • – Explain why it is interesting

I like to watch discovery and national geographic channels a lot. They show many shows which provide knowledge about wild and aquatic animals’ life so I know about many aquatic animals. Unfortunately, I have not seen many of them in real life. But If I have to choose one of them here then I would like to talk about catfish.

I remember when I was about 10 years old, my parents took me to a temple which is located at the outskirts of my town. It’s name is Sukhchan Sahib. There is a holy pond which has historical importance and in that pond I saw many catfish fish for the first time. Most of them were either white or light grey in colour. They were about 1 feet in length. One day, I had some fruits with me and I started throwing some pieces towards them and they ate them all but one person who might be the caretaker there approached me and stopped me from feeding fish and also told me that this was not their food. When they had that food they got sick and even sometimes died.

Actually they had only a particular type of fish food. So from that day onwards I never did that. But every Sunday I used to go and sit there for quite a while as watching those fish made me feel a lot more relaxed and blissful. I can’t even explain how good I felt when I used to spend my time watching them. Even nowadays, whenever I get some free time, I love to go and spend some time there.

Follow-ups

1. Why do people like to keep pets?
Indian people like to keep pets because pets are wonderful companions. Pets, such as dogs give you unconditional love. They also provide security. Some people keep pets in their homes to teach responsibility to their children. People who suffer from depression are advised by their doctors to keep pets.

2. What should we do to protect endangered animals?
We should help the governments and NGOs by contributing some funds, however small they may be. We should not do hunting and poaching of animals. We should educate those who are not aware of the importance of animals and the effects their extinction can have on us.

3. Do you support doing experiments on animals?
I do not support experimenting on animals, because nowadays, we can do computer simulated experiments to see the effects of drugs. We should realize that animals are not humans and so any effect on them may not be there on humans. Moreover, animals are sentient beings and should not be disturbed for our selfish motives.

4. Why do some people refuse to eat animals?
Some people refuse to eat animals on religious grounds. Some people just don’t like the unnecessary killing of animals. They feel that plant sources can also provide them enough nutrients.

5. What would happen when some species disappear on earth?
It would disturb the ecological chain and would affect us directly or indirectly. We would also lose out on the diversity of nature.
