Formal Letters and Informal Letters

Formal letters:- is the one that you write to an unknown person or someone who is at a higher or respectable position than you or who is elder to you and is not your family member.

Informal Letters:- are the one that you write to someone whom you know personally like your friend, family member, neighbor, classmate or coworker.

Difference between formal and informal

  • The purpose of writing an informal letter is totally different from the purpose of a formal letter.
  • The content of the two styles is also different.
  • The style of greeting and addressing the letter is different
  • There is a set format for formal letter while there is not set structure for an informal letter

Structure of Letter

Salutation :- Dear Sir/ Dear friend/Hello, Name of your friend / Hi, Rohan

Para 1 :- Reason for writing letter+ elaborate the first bullet point give in the question.

Para 2 :- Elaborate the second bullet point

Para 3 :- Elaborate the third bullet point

Closing Line :-

Formal (I look forward to hearing from you            or             I look forward to receiving your response on it.)

Informal (Hope to see you soon)

If letters begins with Dear Sir/ Madam then salutation ends with “Yours Faithfully

If letters begins with Dear John then salutation ends with “Yours Sincerely

To      End the letter:-
