Describe a person you know who is working on protecting the environment

  • Who is that person

  • What does he/she do

When we talk about the earth’s environment, we are talking about the health of the atmosphere, forests, plants, animals, water, and each ecosystem. Everything from the roots of trees underground to the air we breathe is part of the environment, and the health of each part affects the health of the whole. There are a lot of threats to the environment. These include climate change caused by greenhouse gasses, air and water pollution, deforestation, and more. It’s easy to look at that list and feel small and insignificant. After all, the earth has over 7 billion people.

Every person has to make his or her own choices about protecting the environment. Here I would like to talk about a person who is working on making the world less dependent on fossil fuel and shift everyone to solar energy. His name is Elon Musk founder of PayPal, Space-X and Tesla Motors Company, the South African wunderkind is now the major investor and chair of the board at Tesla Motors (a Silicon Valley electric car start-up). The company plans to shake up the moribund US auto industry and dramatically curb CO2 emissions, ripping out the internal combustion engine and the petrol tank, and replacing both with a motor that boasts few moving parts and the sort of lithium batteries found in laptops. A limited-edition Tesla Roadster, a sports car that reaches 60 mph in less than four seconds, and can do 245 miles per charge, is due this year. Hollywood co-stars such as George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio have bagged the first of a 600-car production run being built by Lotus in the UK. Next up, says Tesla, is a mass-market family sedan that could be fuelled by solar panels on the garage roof. Elon Musk is presently working on making more powerful lithium batteries which get charge with solar energy which can be used as a substitute for fossil fuels and will reduce carbon dioxide. He is also working on making solar cell roof tiles which can be installed on the roof head and will produce the necessary electricity for the household daily work. His work always motivates me to do something for the environment protection. I think every one of us can take small steps like saving water, growing trees and so on, and make our environment better.

Follow Ups

1. Is it important to protect the environment?
Yes, I believe that it is our moral responsibility to protect the environment as we are the ones responsible for its deterioration. Secondly, I think our survival depends upon the environment so we really don’t have a choice in this matter.

2. Should schools teach students to protect the environment?
Yes, today the I believe the importance of schools in teaching morals and values are paramount. We live in a nuclear society where in most cases both parents are busy working. School is the only place left where students can learn about the environment and its protection.

3. Do schools in your country teach students to protect the environment?
Yes, today environment and its protection is a separate subject in school. Both the necessity and the ways to protect and save the environment are covered in schools. Besides this, there are also environment fairs organized by schools from time to time.

4. Do companies in your country protect the environment and do they have responsibilities to protect the environment?
Unfortunately, most of the companies in India aren’t doing much about the environment. However, recently the governments have started incentivizing companies to protect the environment in form of tax waivers and subsidies. This might change the trend. Coming to the second question, yes they definitely have the responsibility to protect the environment since they are a part of the society as well.
