Most countries aim to improve their standard of living through economic development, somehow it can lose important social value as a result. Do the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages?

Over the last few decades, many countries are involved in improving the economic condition and uplifting the living standard of the people. An argument is often put forward that in the race of improving the living standard, people are neglecting the social values. I believe that although such development has both pros and cons, the benefits clearly outstrip its drawbacks.

Despite the disadvantages below, the main advantage is development in economy attracts more foreign investors to invest and open a branch in the country and creates more job opportunity. It even attracts overseas skilled professionals to get high pay. In addition, people’s lives improve because of their advanced standard of public services such as health and education. Improved health care can improve the quality of life through treating diseases and increasing people’s life expectancy. Another obvious benifit is exporting and importing goods improves the economy and provides foreign goods at cheaper prices. It has been historically established that countries, having a better standard of living, stand better chances of preserving their traditions, and even propagating them across the world as has been seen and experienced in case of USA.

Admittedly, there are some disadvantages. Firstly, other people perceive that this could lead to loss of social values. Competition and passion to earn more money make people work for more hours which result in isolation of social contacts. Working parents would not have enough quality time to spend with their children. Hence, children will tend to emulate their bad influence peers and eventually involve to an antisocial activity or juvenile delinquency. Secondly, due to the sedentary lifestyle, people become obese; and even faces many health risks.

In conclusion, I would rather emphasize that progress has enormous benefits and countries cannot sideline this phenomenon in name of preserving traditions and their culture.
