The bar graph reveals the changes in four different types of transport used by European residents for commuting to work between 1950 and 1990.
Overall, cars became the most popular transport over the year while transport on foot became the least popular.
It can be seen from the cursory glance at the graph that the proportion of people using the bus increased significantly from approximately 19% in 1950 to 30% in 1970 before falling back to the 1950 figure by 1990. However, the 40 year period witnessed dramatic growth from 5% to 40% in the percentage of travellers using the car and this rise was particularly noticeable between 1950 and 1970, during which the figure became 6 times
On the contrary, the percentage of those who used the bike showed a sharp decrease from around 29% in the beginning to 8% at the end of the period, though the decline was more in the last 20 years. Likewise, there was a significant drop in the figure on foot from about 39% to almost 7% among this span.
