Spelling Rules

Rule number – 1

The end consonant is usually doubled when there is one vowel letter before it.

While adding “ed” or “ing”

  • Recur              Recurred           Recurring
  • Plan                 Planned             Planning

Exceptions

While adding “er” or “est”

For making comparative and superlative

  • Thin             Thinner              Thinnest
  • Big                Bigger                 Biggest
  • Sad                Sadder               Saddest
  • Fat                 Fatter                 Fattest
  • Mad               Madder            Maddest

While making “Noun” of a “Verb”

  • Cut               Cutter
  • Swim            Swimmer
  • Run               Runner
  • Sin                 Sinner
  • Rub                Rubber
  • Rob                Robber
  • Travel             Traveller
  • Control          Controller

Rule number – 2

The end consonant is not doubled When there are two Vowels before it.

While adding “ed” or “ing”

  • Reap           Reaped              Reaping
  • Heap           Heaped             Heaping
  • Team           Teamed             Teaming
  • Shout          Shouted            Shouting
  • Cool            Cooled              Cooling
  • Fear             Feared              Fearing
  • Equal           Equaled            Equaling

Rule number – 3

The Noun and Adjectives ending in “y” change to “i” while adding any suffix like  “er, est, ly, full, ness”

Example:-

  • Tidy               Tidier             Tidiest
  • Sunny            Sunnier          Sunniest
  • Happy           Happier         Happiest
  • Fly                  Flier
  • Plenty           Plentiful
  • Pity                Pitiful
  • Beauty          Beautiful
  • Mercy           Merciful

Rule number – 4

The Verbs ending in “y” change to “i” while adding “ed”

but remained unchanged while adding “ing”

Example:-

  • Rely           Relied           Relying
  • Marry       Married        Marrying
  • Try             Tried              Trying
  • Carry        Carried          Carrying

Words ending in “y” with the vowel do not change

  • Obey               Obeyed            Obeying
  • Pray                Prayed              Praying
  • Enjoy              Enjoyed            Enjoying

Exceptions: –

  • Say            Said          Saying
  • Pay            Paid          Paying
  • Lay            Laid          Laying

Rule number – 4

When Words ending in “ll” are compounded both become single “I”

Or when words are converted into adjectives

But when Adjectives which end in “I” are converted into Adverbs by using “ly” then “ll” is used

Example:-

  • Will + Full  =  Wilful    –   Wilfully
  • Full  +  Fill  =  Fulfil
  • Beauty  –   Beautiful   –   Beautifully
  • Peace    –   Peaceful    –   Peacefully
  • Use        –   Useful       –   Usefully
  • Help       –  Helpful      –   Helpfully
  • Meaning –   Meaningful  – Meaningfully
  • Soul         –     Soulful        –     Soulfully
  • Joy           –     Joyful          –    Joyfully
  • Hope       –     Hopeful      –  Hopefully
  • Mercy     –      Merciful    –    Mercifully

Rule number – 5

The letter “c” is followed by “ei”, In all other cases it is written as “ie”

Examples: –
Receive
Perceive
Deceive
Conceive
Ceiling

Examples: –
Niece
Siege
Belief
Achieve

Exceptions: –

Leisure      Counterfeit       Freight       Their     Height      Heir     Reign
