Cue-Card 17. Describe a historical event in your country that interests you

Describe a historical event in your country that interests you

 You should say:

-What the event is

-How you know about it

-When it happened

-Why it is interesting

  • I can’t say that history is my true love, but there is one historical event that really sparked my interest. I’m talking about the declaration of independence of India.
  • And I would say that it’s not Independence itself that I consider interesting, but the events that actually made it possible.
  • Frankly speaking, until recently I hardly knew anything about it. I just knew that India’s Independence was declared in August, 1947.
  • It was only when I started doing research for my history class that I found out a lot of interesting facts about it.
  • I remember I came across one article that made me so impressed that I read a dozen more articles and books dedicated to this topic.
  • Actually, the reason why I became so interested is that different historians presented different viewpoints on what lead to it.
  • The official version is that Churchill, the prime minister of England at that time, was fighting Germany during World War II and needed help because Germany was a very strong enemy.
  • He promised Nehru that if Indian forces joined the allies in sufficient numbers to win the war then he would grant independence. Although Indian refused to help, but the war was won.
  • Hitler destroyed the economy of Britain to such an extent that it was no longer able to financially maintain its military forces, and it was in such bad shape that, regardless of Gandhi or any other charismatic leader, Britain would inevitably have left India in 1947 purely for financial reasons.
  • As a result, many people suppose that if it hadn’t been for that terrible war, Britain wouldn’t have granted Independence to India.
  • Another interesting opinion is that Britain was incapable of containing the burgeoning freedom movements in their colonies, especially the unrestrained freedom movement going in India.
  • So, as you see there is still debate as to the root causes of this event. This is what makes me continue doing research on the topic.
  • And, of course, it’s a memorable milestone in the history of my country, therefore I think that every citizen should know some more information about it, not just the year when it happened.
  • Also, helped me realise what sorts of factors tend to change the world, and it made me understand that one event in one country can set off a large series of changes not only in this particular country, but all over the world.
